Rachel Loden, Kulchur Girl: Notes from Berkeley 1965

Available November 2014

Rachel Loden’s book Dick of the Dead was shortlisted for the PEN USA Literary Award for Poetry and the California Book Award. Her first collection, Hotel Imperium, won the Contemporary Poetry Series and was selected as one of the ten best poetry books of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle. She is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize and her work appears recently in A Poet’s Craft (Michigan), 99 Poems for the 99 Percent (99:The Press), The Bloomsbury Anthology of Contemporary Jewish American Poetry (Bloomsbury) and elsewhere.

Description: A girl just seventeen, high school dropout, travels to the July 1965 Berkeley Poetry Conference to encounter some of the giants of The New American Poetry 1945-1960 and after (Creeley, Olson, Duncan, Blaser, Ginsberg, Dorn, Sanders, Berrigan, &c.). These notes from her surviving diary show her longing to be taught, but also fiercely teenage, perversely independent and contradictory.

". . . delightful, surprising, insightful, sometimes dolorous and frightening" Kevin Killian
