Elena Gomez, All Down, Honey
‘An eviscerating, clever, brilliant and timely work.’ EVELYN ARALUEN
All Down, Honey is Elena Gomez’s fourth poetry collection, a sequence of five long poems that explore the flows and relations of humans, animals and commodities among oceans and lands. In Gomez’s distinctive voice, which playfully shifts registers and takes on a range of sonically distinct modes, these poems deepen our sensorial experiences of ecological crisis under capitalism. All Down, Honey takes up language as a metabolic material, unfolding as a cascading series of images and sounds—from nurdles spilled into the ocean, deep sea mining and sacrifice zones to laundromat raves, stone fruit and neighbourhood possums. It expertly blends everyday human experiences, non-human animal subjectivities, global flows of materials and information, and the ongoing extractive processes that fuel those flows. Gomez writes about the constant motion that makes up everyday life, and the strange occurrences we might observe if we attempt to pause for a moment.
Elena Gomez lives on unceded Wurundjeri country. She is the author of Body of Work (2018, Cordite Books), Admit the Joyous Passion of Revolt (2020, Puncher & Wattmann) and Goats (2025, RunAmok Press), as well as several chapbooks and pamphlets. Body of Work, was Highly Commended in the 2019 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards. Elena’s poetry has previously been highly commended and shortlisted in the Judith Wright Poetry Prize, the Newcastle Poetry Prize and the Fair Work Prize. Elena is currently the Poetry Editor at Overland journal. She holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Melbourne.
‘All Down, Honey manifests new ways to give tender attention to multiple scales of colonial catastrophe—through reading, striking, loving, collecting. Salvaged scraps of language and story are part-collaged, part-composted to test the stark limits of public discourse around ecological crisis.’ KATE FAGAN
