Brett Cross, Islands
Exploring the littoral between sea and coastal Hauraki of New Zealand, myth and history, the personal and the shared, the long anticipated debut collection by Brett Cross, Islands is a sweeping and evocative look at not just a specific locale, but also language, and how it can be compressed into meaningful representations at once both familiar and strange.
‘What strikes me about Cross’s poetry is its distinctly local atmosphere. His work encapsulates a quintessentially Aotearoa flavour with its lyricism, tone and setting, where it often celebrates recognisably regional parts of the Waikato and its local flora and fauna. Cross’s poetry is always fresh and innovative, and showcases not only the richness of New Zealand literature, but also the landscape and environment.’
