Luke Davies, The Feral Aphorisms
A dense, tight yet playful cluster that rewards repeated readings (at varied speeds!), Luke Davies' second Vagabond offering, Feral Aphorisms, plays with the form by imitating its structure, if not always its spirit; sometimes, they really are aphorisms. At other times the form operates as pure Trojan Horse: something beautiful, strange, ecstatic is smuggled to us, a kind of litany of yearning, and of the sheer surprise of being in a body that is to die.
Luke Davies is the author of three novels (most recently God of Speed) and four volumes of poetry (the latest, Interferon Psalms, won the inaugural Prime Minister's Literary Award for Poetry). Davies' poetry collection Totem won the South Australian Premier's Literary Award for Poetry, the Grace Leven Poetry Prize, the Age's Poetry Book of the Year Award and the overall Age Book of the Year Award, an unusual feat for a book of poetry; in 2004 Davies was also awarded the Philip Hodgins Memorial Medal for Poetry. Candy has been published in France, Spain, Germany, Israel, Greece, the UK and USA.
