Arcana and hypothetical grimoires are proposed in Gargantuan Terrier for reading the otherwise opaque punctures and cracks in visions of Melbourne. But, what does emerge when “the bobtail is recovered” it is no guarantee of the Real but instead another setting, “the blue provenance”: the Darling Ranges, near Perth, Western Australia. This source is an unslain beast and inadequate muse, however, and substitutions here effuse in place of nostalgia, appearing as diving boards, a rooster’s comb, an orrery, a possum carcass, a squat of sequins, even, buggies or dinghies.

Corey Wakeling lives in Melbourne. His poetry and reviews appear regularly in Australian and international journals, magazines, and anthologies. He is a fledgling Samuel Beckett scholar, PhD candidate and tutor in literary studies at the University of Melbourne, interviews editor of Cordite, and reviews editor of poetry journal Rabbit. Gargantuan Terrier, Buggy or Dinghy is his first chapbook.
