Masayo Koike, Selected Poems

Masayo Koike’s poetry is quiet rather than angry; in many poems we catch a glimpse of  a calm, at times almost naive intelligence, registering the events of the world on the senses of the perceiver. Her language is subtle, attuned to the natural rhythms of speech. In short, she  works at her craft in a subtle, gentle manner, revealing slowly her wonders to behold.  Her poetry is sensitively translated into supple English verse by the well-known poet and translator, Leith Morton. A fine poet, Masayo Koike’s work and presence is already becoming known on the international stage.

Masayo Koike was born and educated in Tokyo. The author of several award-winning volumes of verse, she is also active as an essayist and author of a number of works of short fiction.
